REPUBLICAN CITY NE 68971

Republican City NE is the only town in the world, we've found, that has that name.  In 1872 Dr. John McPherson came from Brownville, NE and brought lumber and material to start building a town including several stores and a flour mill.  The Burlington Railroad came to and past Republican City by 1881. Rep City was the first town to have a bridge over the Republican river, but the river was not kind to the town.  The "big flood of 1935" hit Republican City hard and because of this the Corps of Engineers designed a dam across the valley. The whole town had to be moved to higher ground, but that's a whole 'nuther story.
